What is Open Enrollment? What if I miss it?

Open Enrollment is an annual event during which you can enroll in health insurance. For 2025, Open Enrollment lasts between November 1, 2024 to January 15, 2025. During this period, Americans can enroll in health, dental, and vision insurance.

If you miss Open Enrollment, you need to have a "qualifying event" to apply for an individual health insurance plan. A qualifying event can include:

  • Losing existing health coverage
  • Getting married or divorced
  • Having or adopting a family
  • Turning 26 and losing coverage through a parent's plan
  • Death in the family
  • Moving to a new zip code
  • Becoming a US citizen

Alternatively, you can wait until next year's Open Enrollment or enroll in a short-term health insurance plan or a faith-based sharing ministry.
